Welcome to the Crime in Rhode Island Dashboard
The Rhode Island Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program serves as the state repository for the collection of crime statistics and its primary objective is to generate reliable information for use in law enforcement administration, operation, and management. As the Program has evolved and the demand for transparency has increased, so has the demand for the data compiled under this Program. Members of the general public, such as legislators, media, and academia rely on this data for information on the fluctuations in the level of crime from year-to-year in their communities and throughout the state. The Rhode Island UCR Online Portal serves as a tool to provide greater transparency and access to the richer crime data being reported to the Rhode Island’s UCR Unit and replaces the Crime in Rhode Island Publication.
The UCR Unit makes every effort to ensure accuracy in reporting and conducts quality control checks on the data received from Rhode Island’s law enforcement agencies. The accuracy of the statistics depends primarily on the adherence of each law enforcement agency to establish standards of reporting; therefore, it is the responsibility of each agency to submit accurate data and correct any data found to be submitted in error. Participation in the Rhode Island UCR Program is mandatory based on Rhode Island General Law § 12-24-1.
The Digital Front Door to NIBRS Statistics
The Crime in Rhode Island Dashboard is a public read-only web service that returns statistical information through data visualizations and is organized around the guidelines of the National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS). The Reports Page, located on the Menu Bar, provides near real-time information based on monthly submissions from state and local law enforcement. This is not a public web service for submitting or modifying data.
For questions regarding this site, please contact the Rhode Island Department of Public Safety, Division of State Police at RIUCR1@risp.gov.
NIBRS Training
Rhode Island law enforcement personnel have numerous opportunities a year to receive FBI CJIS NIBRS training. The FBI training team has 275 logins for each training session and is generally held over 3 days for a total of 12 hours of instruction.
All UCR/RMS Managers are strongly encouraged to attend the virtual training to strengthen knowledge of classifying and reporting crimes according to NIBRS Guidelines.
This training provides a valuable opportunity to ensure that your agency is complying and will assist in mitigating any problems with reporting crime data through the NIBRS program.
If it has been a year since you attended this course, we recommend that you attend again as it is a good refresher. The discussions and points that are made throughout the training are specific to current trends and reporting problems. Training is scheduled for May 7-9, 2024, 12PM – 5PM and July 9-11, 2024, 12PM -5PM . The link for registration is: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/RSLV7W3 Registration link will CLOSE when class reaches maximum capacity. Additional FBI training opportunities will be provided and posted when available.
In addition to the FBI CJIS NIBRS training, the Rhode Island State Police, UCR Unit provides one-on-one training at your convenience to address the specific reporting needs for your department. Appointments are available Monday – Friday from 7:30AM – 4:00PM or additional day/time arrangements will be made to accommodate your schedule. Collect, Analyze and Empower
The Crime in Rhode Island Dashboard provides NIBRS crime data to help form a clear picture of what is happening in communities and show what the issues are and where the most problematic areas are located. NIBRS provides a wealth of information which is available at your fingertips. Data can be downloaded, searched, and machine-read to facilitate research to develop data-driven decisions and provide tools for computer crime analysis.
NIBRS enforces routine crime reporting statistical procedures that help ensure law enforcement agencies use common collection practices.
FBI CJIS trainers from the UCR Program conducted 6 three-day Rhode Island trainings sessions between January 2021 and July 2023.

Information About the Data
The Rhode Island UCR Online Portal was developed to provide a platform for the public to access on demand statistical information about crime reported in the state and designed to allow users to create unique queries utilizing specific data resulting in a more intuitive way to gather statistical data that is tailored to the needs of the requestor, without the need to research static reports and make a manual request to the UCR Program.
It is important to note that the Crime in Rhode Island publication was a historical “point in time” document that reflected crime statistics reported up to the time of publication and was a snapshot of the UCR database frozen in time which did not reflect the continual updating of the live database. Crime data available through the UCR Online Portal is dynamic and reflects data that may have been reported to the program after the publication date. Because of the possibility for continuous updates to the data in the UCR Online Portal, users must be aware that statistics from the Portal may not align with statistics published in the Crime in Rhode Island publication for the same period. As of January 1, 2021, the Rhode Island UCR Online Portal replaces the annual publication Crime in Rhode Island.
